VdS 3188 Explained: Water Mist Guidelines in Germany

VdS 3188 is the guideline VdS Schadenverhütung publishes for planning and installing high-pressure water mist systems (VdS). Its scope is set by pressure rather than by application: fixed water mist sprinkler systems and water mist extinguishing systems with a system pressure above 16 bar, in buildings, industrial plants and other facilities on land.

What does VdS 3188 cover?

The current edition is VdS 3188:2026-07 (03), VdS-Richtlinien für Wassernebel-Sprinkleranlagen und Wassernebel-Löschanlagen (Hochdruck-Systeme), Planung und Einbau: VdS guidelines for water mist sprinkler systems and water mist extinguishing systems (high-pressure systems), planning and installation (VdS). VdS describes it as setting requirements and giving recommendations for the planning, installation and maintenance of those systems, and applies it to any addition, extension, repair, maintenance or other modification as well as to new systems. DIN Media lists the October 2019 edition as withdrawn (DIN Media).

Two points follow for a buyer:

  • The pressure threshold decides whether it applies. VdS 3188 covers systems above 16 bar, so a system operating at or below that pressure falls outside it.
  • It applies for the life of the system. Because the guideline covers maintenance and modification, it keeps applying after handover, whenever the system is extended, repaired or changed.

How does VdS test water mist systems?

VdS publishes fire test protocols for water mist systems as the VdS 3883 series, whose German title is Versuchskonzepte für Wassernebel-Systeme. Part 6, Protection of Paint Booths, dated June 2020, is listed as current by DIN Media (DIN Media). VdS's general procedure for the testing, recognition and certification of fire protection and security products and systems is VdS 2344 (VdS).

The pattern matches the other frameworks on this site: a planning guideline on one side, application-specific fire tests on the other. The European series works the same way (EN 14972 explained), and why a fire test report and a component certificate are different evidence is set out in system fire testing vs component certificates. For paint shops, the NFPA route is covered in paint booth fire suppression under NFPA 33.

Where does DIN EN 14972 fit?

Every national standards body in the CEN and CENELEC system is obliged to adopt each European Standard as a national standard and to withdraw any national standard that conflicts with it. One EN therefore becomes the national standard in all 34 countries the members cover, including every EU member state (CEN-CENELEC).

In Germany, the design, installation, inspection and maintenance part of the water mist series is DIN EN 14972-1, listed by DIN Media in its July 2025 edition (DIN Media). France publishes the same part as NF EN 14972-1+A1, dated May 2025 (AFNOR), and the UK as BS EN 14972-1:2020+A1:2025 (BSI).

VdS 3188 is a VdS guideline, not a national standard. Where a specification cites both, it should say which governs where they differ, and which fire test evidence the design relies on.

Water mist in German road tunnels

RABT, the German guidelines for the equipment and operation of road tunnels, is published by the road and transport research association FGSV (FGSV). How the European rules frame fixed firefighting is covered in the EU Tunnel Directive and fixed firefighting.

Research on how people respond when those systems discharge has come from BASt, the Federal Highway and Transport Research Institute. Its 2018 report analysed tunnel users' behaviour when a fixed firefighting system activates, and compared water mist and compressed air foam systems (BASt). Both the behavioural analysis and the interviews gave indications that activation tends not to affect users' behaviour negatively.

The report also found that the system reduced the intelligibility of the announcement telling users to leave the tunnel. It concluded that the instruction in a real event has to be clear and easily understood, that other ways of informing tunnel users should be available, and that the announcement should come early and, where possible, before the system activates. That makes public address intelligibility and activation sequence part of the tunnel's fire life-safety design, not an afterthought to the suppression system.

What should a German water mist specification ask for?

  • the planning basis: VdS 3188 in its current edition, DIN EN 14972-1, or both, and which governs;
  • the system pressure, which decides whether VdS 3188 applies at all;
  • the fire test evidence for the application, naming the protocol (a VdS 3883 part or an EN 14972 part) and the laboratory;
  • the installer and the maintenance regime for the life of the system;
  • in tunnels, how evacuation announcements stay intelligible, and ideally come before discharge.

Where Mistelix stands

Mistelix designs its water mist systems with reference to NFPA 750. Full-scale fire testing, FM Approval and UL listing are planned. Our live status against every standard we work to is in our approvals ledger.

FAQ

Common questions

What is VdS 3188?
VdS 3188 is the VdS guideline for planning and installing water mist sprinkler systems and water mist extinguishing systems in the high-pressure range. The current edition, VdS 3188:2026-07 (03), covers the planning, installation and maintenance of fixed water mist systems with a system pressure above 16 bar in buildings, industrial plants and other facilities on land.
Does VdS 3188 apply to changes to an existing system?
Yes. VdS states that the guideline's requirements and recommendations also apply to any addition, extension, repair, maintenance or other modification of a water mist system, not only to new installations.
Does VdS publish fire test protocols for water mist?
Yes. VdS publishes fire test protocols for water mist systems as the VdS 3883 series. Part 6, for the protection of paint booths, is dated June 2020 and listed as current by DIN Media. VdS's general procedure for testing, recognising and certifying fire protection and security products and systems is VdS 2344.
How does VdS 3188 relate to DIN EN 14972-1?
DIN EN 14972-1 is the German edition of the European water mist standard for design, installation, inspection and maintenance, listed by DIN Media in its July 2025 edition. VdS 3188 is a separate guideline published by VdS, so a specification that cites both should say which one governs where they differ.
What did German research find about fixed firefighting in road tunnels?
A 2018 report from BASt, Germany's Federal Highway and Transport Research Institute, studied tunnel users' behaviour when a fixed firefighting system activates, comparing water mist and compressed air foam systems. It found indications that activation tends not to affect users' behaviour negatively, but that the system reduced the intelligibility of the announcement telling them to leave the tunnel.
